Musculoskeletal Healthcare Consultation
It is a common misperception that we will develop musculoskeletal pain as we grow older and our body grows weaker. This has led to a pessimistic attitude towards treatment and prevention of musculoskeletal pain. However, our experience with patients prove that musculoskeletal pain is NOT unavoidable and can be overcome by restoring the body’s alignment.
When our body is properly aligned, joints in our body share the burden of moving the body in an optimal manner. We could move about in a way that places the least amount of stress on the body.
Our body is in an ideal alignment if:
-
Hip, knee and ankle joint fall on a single vertical line.
-
Shoulders, hips, knees, and ankles are horizontally level.
-
Corresponding joints - left & right knees, left & right shoulders for example - are aligned when viewed in profile; one joint should not be in front or behind the other.

Falling Out of Alignment
However, when our body deviates from the ideal alignment, joints have to perform wasteful motions which strain the joints, causing pain over time. Many factors can cause our body to deviate from the ideal alignment; injury, poor walking postures, unsuitable or ill-fitting shoes, etc.
Often times, the underlying problem goes undetected until pain manifest in various parts of the body. This is because the body will try to adjust itself to accommodate the misalignment. Therefore, locating the joints which have fallen out of place and providing adequate support is key to treatment.
For example, a person may experience knee pain because his/her knees are constantly bearing extra load when moving. However, the root cause of the pain is actually the ankles, which are shifting load they are unable to bear onto the knee. Therefore, it is crucial to provide support to the ankles so it can perform its duty in order to achieve long-term pain relief.
If you find this hard to understand, consider what happens when you sprain your ankle. You develop a limp because your brain coordinates
the healthy leg and the rest of your body to compensate for your sprained ankle.
Fig. Musculoskeletal conditions develop over time when the brain is unable to distribute the load of moving amongst the various joints efficiently. The joint bearing extra load will become strained over time.
Here at the centre, our experienced orthotist can pinpoint the root cause of your problem and provide a treatment tailored to the specifics of your condition.
