Musculoskeletal Healthcare Consultation

It is a common misperception that we will develop musculoskeletal pain as we grow older and our body grows weaker. This has led to a pessimistic attitude towards the treatment and prevention of musculoskeletal pain. However, our experience with patients prove that musculoskeletal pain is NOT unavoidable and can be overcome by restoring the body’s alignment.

When our body is properly aligned, the joints in our body share the burden of moving the body in an optimal manner. This allows us to move about in a manner that places the least amount of stress on the body.

Fig. Shoulders, hips, knees & ankles level.

Our body is in an ideal alignment if:

  1. Our hip joint, knee joint, and ankle joint fall on a single vertical line.

  2. Our shoulders, hips, knees, and ankles are horizontally level.

  3. Corresponding joints - left & right knees, left & right shoulders for example - are aligned when viewed in profile; one joint should not be further in front or behind the other.

Falling Out of Alignment

However, when our body deviates from the ideal alignment, joints have to perform wasteful motions which strain the joints, causing pain over time. Many factors can cause our body to deviate from the ideal alignment; injury, poor walking postures, unsuitable or ill-fitting shoes, etc.

Often times, the underlying problem goes undetected until pain manifest in various parts of the body. This is because the body will try to adjust itself to accommodate the misalignment. Therefore, locating the joints which have fallen out of place and providing adequate support is key to treatment.

Fig. Musculoskeletal conditions develop over time when the brain is unable to distribute the load of moving amongst the various joints efficiently. The joint bearing extra load will become strained over time.

A person may experience knee pain because his/her knees are constantly bearing extra load when moving. However, the root cause of the pain is actually the ankles, which are shifting load they are unable to bear onto the knee. Therefore, it is crucial to provide support to the ankles so it can perform its duty in order to achieve long-term pain relief.

If you find this hard to understand, consider what happens when you sprain your ankle. You develop a limp because your brain coordinates
the healthy leg and the rest of your body to compensate for your sprained ankle.

Here at the centre, our experienced orthotist can pinpoint the root cause of your problem and provide a treatment tailored to the specifics of your condition.

Non-Invasive Treatment Solution

Recognising the interconnectedness of the various joints in the body, the centre's founder developed a unique orthotic footwear and insoles treatment system that can restore your body's alignment starting from the feet.*

TLM’s Orthotic Footwear and Insoles can remedy various musculoskeletal conditions by forcing your body to rest the overworked muscles and work the underused muscles. It does this by channeling ground reaction force to act in a positive manner on your body.

Each time you take a step or perform a motion in contact with the ground, you exert a force on the ground. The ground, in turn, exerts an equal amount of ground reaction force back at us. This force – which may sometimes be as much as twice or three times your body weight – travels up the bones and muscles of your lower body, your feet bearing the brunt of it. (Hence the arc of the feet to absorb the shock.)

Each pair of insoles produced at the centre has a unique contour designed according to the patient’s feet. By wearing and walking about in it regularly, patients find their musculoskeletal health improve starting from the feet.

Coupled with trainings given to help kick poor walking habits, most patients can expect immediate pain relief and reclaim their mobility after a year of treatment.

* While most patients can expect a full recovery wearing only the centre's orthotic footwear and insoles, some patients may need to be fitted with additional braces. You may find out more by enquiring with our orthotist during consultation.
